IS BEING GRATEFUL THE KEY TO HAPPINESS
What is Happiness?
Well, this is quite a subjective term as different people might have different perspectives w.r.t this term. For some, it can be as small as enjoying a beautiful sunset while for some it can be expressing gratitude and appreciation for the good things in one’s life. For me, it is experiencing moments of peace while being present in the moment.
What is Gratitude?
Gratitude is associated with many benefits, both physically and mentally. A person learns how to be resilient or how to deal with when the situation gets tough. Additionally, it is helping people to be present at the moment rather than thinking about what is lacking in life.
My parents usually said this to me when I was a kid - Until you learn how to be grateful for the things you currently have in your life you will never attract the things you wish to achieve in life. As a child, I was always taught to be grounded, and down to earth at the same time, they never stopped me from being me. A kid in me always had that spark of doing something different, that zeal of achieving something different & unique, which they were very supportive of.
Is being grateful actually helping people? Let’s understand this with two different mindsets:
What Millennials think –
In a world where people constantly compete for money, power, status, etc. Somewhere, we are lost in this chaos. Vulnerability & authenticity are the two most important things in one’s life. A person doesn't need to be sorted all the time. There are days when a person feels that I don’t have it all figured out which is perfectly fine. A person can be messy in so many ways after all we are all humans. It’s the simple things in life that makes you happy. Like waking up next to your loved one, having breakfast with family, or experiencing honest moments with friends, where you can be your truest self. Staying grounded is extremely important. Gratitude is not something you inherit but it’s something that you build up. It’s a process that happens over time with unique experiences in one’s life.
While let’s see what Gen X has to say –
My Grandma used to say, “Every time, whatever chore you perform i.e., right from waking up in the morning, to the time when you are going back to bed at night, just start paying an intricate amount of attention, and reflect upon the things that you might have taken for granted”. Practicing this will activate neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin which further releases oxytocin. This works just as if you are building a muscle i.e., as and when you practice it more, the more you are likely to see the benefits.
Well, different people can have different approaches to implementing this. For some being thankful can be as simple as - Taking a peaceful walk in the park early in the morning, maintaining a gratitude jar or may be sitting right next to the person with whom they can comfortably express their emotions and feel them at ease. It’s not about the different approaches that you implement, but rather how you make your way towards it.
Concluding, when you start looking at things from a different perspective, like the way life is happening around you, you can visualize each and every minute detail that is involved in bringing life to the dead. Let’s say a mango, from sowing the seed to right at your plate, just recollect how many stages it involves, the people and different sets of steps – from the one who planted it, to the one who sold it, to the one who brought it & finally to the shops…
Just like this, you can look at life from the very same perspective right from your breathing to the food you consume, to the things you currently possess. It all wouldn’t have been possible without the people who are currently involved in this to bring this up to your table.
These mindful steps can lead a person to become more authentic, centred and serene. Trust me, being humble takes you a long way….
