SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

YOU ARE THE ARTIST OF YOUR OWN LIFE. DON'T HAND THE PAINTBRUSH TO ANYONE ELSE.

Everyone wants to be an inspiration to someone. To reach our goal, all we need is determination, self-confidence and hard work.

The Story of Kalpana Saroj who was born in a poor Dalit family and went to revive a befallen company and became the Chairperson of a multi-million dollar company Kamani Tubes.

Kalpana was born in Roperkheda village in Maharashtra. Belonging to a dalit family, she had to go through a lot of trouble from very little age. Though her father supported her in her studies but the rest of the family had different priorities. They pulled the plug on her education and got her married to a man who was ten years older than her when she was 12. She was moved to slums in Mumbai with her husband's family where her in-laws brutalized her. She was rescued by her father when he came to know his daughter is getting treated cruelly.

She and her family were taunted by the people in her village after she walked out of her marriage and came back home. Unable to bear the comments of the people around, she decided to give up her life and drank three bottles of rat poison. Fortunately, her aunt caught her and rushed her to the hospital.

Kalpana decided to do something big and achieve great heights in her life, so she moved to mumbai with her uncle who would teach her tailoring. Within a few months, she mastered the art of operating an industrial sewing machine and become a senior tailor to get a decent hike in salary.  Things started getting good, but suddenly life took an ugly turn. She lost her younger sister because her family couldn’t arrange enough money for her treatment. This was the turning point of her life. The incident made her realise the importance of money. So she decided not to settle.

For funding, Kalpana took government loan. She worked 16 hours a day,  installed some sewing machines and built a successful business and got married to a furniture businessman.     Kalpana, who was well known for the entrepreneurial skills, the worker’s union of Kamani Tubes — approached her under massive debts and she took charge and helped to reconstruct the company, made it a profitable business with valuation of more than 100 million USD.

Kalpana Saroj was awarded the Padma Shri for Trade and Industry in 2013. She was appointed to the board of directors of Bhartiya Mahila Bank, a bank primarily for women, by the Government of India. She also serves on the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.

The Story of Slumdog millionaire Kalpana Saroj is truly remarkable and inspiring.
