His birth anniversary falls in the month of January as per the lunar calendar. At just the age of nine, he was installed as the leader of the Sikhs which made him the tenth and the final human Sikh Guru after his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur was martyred by emperor Aurangzeb for protecting the rights of Kashmiri Hindus. He was the only son of Guru Tegh Bahadur. His education continued even after he became the 10th Guru, both in reading and writing as well as martial arts such as horse riding and archery. The life example and leadership of Guru Gobind Singh have been of historical importance to the sikh community. His preachings and values have been carried across from generations to generations. Guru ji fought many battles, but his battles were never for land or money like other kings. "He alone is a man who keeps his word, Not that he has one thing in the heart, and another on the tongue."

Guru ji’s greatest achievement was his creation of Khalsa. In the year 1699, Guru ji formed The Khalsa for which he chose 5 “Pyaras” (dear ones) from different locations and castes. He wanted people to know that Humanity is the only religion that must be followed. He always said that “Manas ki jaat sabae ek hee paechanbo”  which means, treat humanity as one race. All Sikhs have been following these sayings with great respect. He was a man of great intellectual attainments. At just the age of 19, Guru ji mastered languages like Gurumukhi, Braj Bhasha, Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi and Urdu. he loved art, out of this love he invented musical instruments “Dilruba” and “Taus”.

Guru ji introduced the five ‘K’s that traditional Sikh community abide by:

" The greatest comforts and lasting peace are obtained, when one eradicates selfishness from within."

He also announced a code of discipline for the khalsa warriors wherein the consumption of Tobacco, eating meat, fornication and adultery were forbidden. Notably, he is credited for finalising the holy Guru Granth Sahib and declaring the primary scripture as the 11th and eternal Guru of Sikhs. The 10th Guru is also credited with the “Dasam Granth”. He fought many battles to protect people against tyrannical and discriminatory rulers, as a believer of Dharam Yudh (war in defence of righteousness) as the last resort. He even lost his 4 sons and mother in the fight against such forces. Guru Gobind Singh passed away in 1708, believed to be aged 41.
